Born in Franklin, Tennessee to country singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife Tish, Cyrus first gained notice when she and her father starred on the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. It became a huge hit and propelled her to stardom. She later switched over to films where she has starred in films such as Hannah Montana: The Movie and The Last Song.
As a singer, she has released 5 albums with her biggest seller being 2013's Bangerz. It features her biggest hit to date, "Wrecking Ball".
Having once had a sweet, girl-next-door image typical of Disney stars when she first started, Cyrus forever shattered her image when she appeared on the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and gave a raunchy performance which included her twerking on singer Robin Thicke while he was singing his hit "Blurred Lines". While the controversy surrounding that helped record sales it had a negative impact on her personal life as well as public perception of her. Bloggers claimed that the change in image and musical sound seemed to reek of desperation on her part to stay relavent while some accused her of being an attention seeker.
Cyrus married Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth, whom she met in 2009 when they starred together in the 2010 film The Last Song, on December 23, 2018. They were first engaged in 2012 but later split in 2013 before reuniting in late 2015.
In January 2016, NBC announced that Cyrus would be a guest advisor during the Knockout Rounds. However, the decision was met with criticism by some who claim that hiring her was nothing more then a desperate move by the show even though she was later praised for giving out good advice to the contestants. It was also announced on March 25, 2016 that Cyrus, along with R&B superstar Alicia Keys, would be joining the show as a coach. She returned for season 13 where one of the artists on her team, Brooke Simpson, finished in 3rd place.
